excerpts from the chapter “The Beauty of Skincare”

As a licensed Esthetician, I’ve long known the benefits of taking care of your skin.  This is one of the few areas that I was faithful in caring for the surface of my skin.  However, I’ve learned that it is just as important to care for your skin from the inside out.  What you eat as well as the amount of water you drink has a huge impact on the appearance of your skin.

Skin, the integumentary system, is the largest organ of your body with six primary functions: protection, sensation, heat regulation, excretion, secretion, and absorption.  Your skin consists of two main layers: your epidermis (outer layer) and dermis (inner layer) and is constantly repairing and replacing itself.  There is a constant action of cells dying and cells regenerating in the skin.

While the sun plays a predominant role in how the skin ages, our environment (pollutants in the air, secondhand smoke, etc..) can all influence the overall health and appearance of our skin.  These pollutants can change the health of the underlying cells and tissues as well as affect the surface appearance of the skin.  The best defense against these pollutants is the simplest one: follow a good daily skin care regimen.

Your absolute minimum skin care requirements will include cleanser and moisturizer; again, that being the bare minimum.  However, I recommend using: Eye Makeup Remover, Milky Cleanser, Foaming Cleanser, Exfoliator, Treatment Mask, Toner, Serum(s), Day/Night Moisture Cream, Eye Cream, Lip Cream with sun protection (minimum SPF 15) included in either your moisturizer or your foundation for maximum benefit.

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions:  Many internal and external factors affect the condition of a person’s skin; however, people are born with their skin type, which is determined by their genetics and ethnicity.  Skin types include dry, normal, combination, oily, or sensitive.  Sensitive skin can be a skin type or a condition depending on the causes.  Other skin conditions include acne, actinic (damage cause by sun exposure), dehydration, pigmentation disorders, comedones, hyperkeratinization, etc…  When choosing a skin care regime it is important to take your skin type, any skin conditions, and your level of aging into account.  It seems logical to me that you would either choose all of your skin care products from the same product line –or– do a very extensive study on all of the ingredients you are combining to make sure that all of your ingredients are compatible with either other prior to mixing them on your skin.  Since most foundations on the market now are non-comedogenic and therefore do not go into your pores but simply sit on the surface of the skin then I will assume they do not mix with your skin care products and therefore not necessary to be of the same line.

The obvious beauty of skin care is that the more nutrients the cells receive, the more youthful the appearance of your skin will be.  But I want to express my love for the beauty of the experience as well.  When choosing your skin care line – touch and smell the products.  Yes, the ingredients are of utmost importance but if you do not like how the products feel or smell then it is unlikely you will stick to the program long enough to see any benefits.  There are so many high quality skin care lines on the market that you should easily be able to find one that has quality ingredients as well as a pleasure to your senses.  I absolutely enjoy those five little minutes of self-pampering every morning and again just before bedtime.

Also, take the time to do learn just a few key ingredients of each step of your regimen.  For me, just knowing the benefits my skin receives makes the experience that much more enjoyable.   You will be surprised how willing your Esthetician or sales rep will be to educate you on the product line of your choice.

So let’s look at the purpose and the beauty of each step to your new skin care regimen:

Eye Makeup Remover is more desirable than your facial cleanser when removing waterproof or smudge resistant eye products for a more gentle removal of eye makeup.  And if you wear contact lens then make sure your Eye Makeup Remover is ophthalmologist tested and ideal for contact lens wearers.  To use – shake and then apply a small amount to a moistened cotton pad, gently wipe off eye makeup using downward strokes and follow with your milky facial cleanser.

A Milky Facial Cleanser is preferred for makeup removal in the evening especially for skin that is dry or sensitive.  To use – apply with fingertips to face and neck in gently upward strokes or upward and outward circles, remove with warm wet facial cloth.

A Foaming Facial Cleanser is my choice for my morning cleanser.  To use – thoroughly wet face and hands with water, place a small amount of cleanser in the palm of your hand and work into a foam, then massage lightly onto wet skin with upward and outward circular movements, rinse well.  I keep this one in my shower and thoroughly enjoy the sensorial pleasure and the way if leaves my skin balanced and velvety-smooth.

Exfoliate approximately twice per week to thoroughly remove impurities and dead cells.  While use will vary with the different exfoliating products most will be applied to damp skin with small circular movements, avoiding the eye area and should be rinsed well.  This is another product I keep in the shower for easier removal.

Mask Treatments are available to treat a range of conditions such as purifying clay based mask to absorb excess oil and surface impurities, nourishing hydrating mask to help improve moisture, or even anti-fatigue masks to stimulate the skin.  Most masks are to be used once or twice per week.  To use – spread evenly over entire face avoiding the eye area, leave on for recommend time, and remove with warm wet facial cloth.  Always follow with toner.

Toner or Toning Lotion – completes the cleansing process for 100% cleansing efficacy as well as restores the skins proper ph balance.  To use – apply a small amount to a cotton round and gently wipe face.  Follow with serum while skin is still damp.

Serums range in benefits from anti-aging, oil-controlling, hydrating, energizing, and many more depending on the ingredients.  If using more than one serum you will usually be instructed to use your treatment (oil-controlling, hydrating, etc..) serum prior to your anti-aging serum depending on the product line of your choice and their recommendations.

Daytime (and Nighttime) Moisture Fluids and Creams are recommend based on your skin type and anti-aging level of concern.  Fluids are best for combination or oily skin types while creams are usually more suitable for dry, normal, and sensitive skin types.  To apply – simply massage gently into skin using upward and outward circular motions.

Eye Creams, depending on ingredients, can have a range of benefits such as reducing the appearance of dark circles as well as correct the appearance of visible wrinkles or fine lines.  To apply – use ring finger to gently tap product under and above eye on the orbital bone and then gentle circles going inward under the eye and around.

Lip Creams to moisturize the lip area.  To apply – simply pat on and around the lips.

More to come……..will update soon.

excerpts from the chapter “The Beauty of Sex”

Let me preface this chapter by saying that after much research and study I’ve come to the conclusion and firmly believe that the emotional detriment of pre-marital sex far outweighs any physical benefit of an active sex life.  Secondly, the health risks to those involved with multiple partners can cause more harm than good.  Studies show the biological health benefits of sex are less common when produced in sexual relationships that introduce anxiety or fear.  The benefits of sex within a secure intimate monogamous relationship can increase the health of the couple beyond the bedroom and permeate into almost every facet of their lives.  With that said – if you are married and faithful to each other – sex is beautiful and healthy – ENJOY.

As an Anti-Aging Treatment:  Sex results in the production of collagen – the substance, which adds smoothness and a beautiful glow to a woman’s skin.  Progesterone, another hormonal product of sex, helps you fight acne.  American scientists concluded as a result of their research that couples, who love each other an average of three times a week, look two or three years younger than their coevals, who either abstain from sex or hardly ever enjoy it.  And the solution for postmenopausal women who suffer from “vaginal atrophy”?  More intercourse.  So I guess it is true – “use it or lose it”.

As Exercise:  Sex is a form of aerobic exercise, and like all exercise, it burns calories.  Sex uses every muscle group in the body including pelvis, buttocks, stomach and arms, and gives the heart and lungs a high-octane aerobic work-out.  Also, regular love acts improve the bearing and exert a favorable influence on the musculoskeletal system.  The pulse rate of a sexually excited individual increases from 70 to 150 beats per minute, which is comparable to muscle efforts of a weight-lifter.  On average – thirty minutes of sex burns approximately 200 calories – about the same as running 15 minutes on a treadmill.  And, because it provides a calorie-burning work-out and helps maintain a healthy weight, it will reduce your risk of diabetes too.

As a Stress Reliever:  Exercise is also good for your mind.  It relieves stress and elevates your mood, due to the release of endorphins.  There have been other studies showing that sex boosts circulation, lowers blood pressure, and might even protect against strokes because of its stress-relieving ability.

As a Pain Reliever:  Orgasm is a powerful pain-killer.  Oxytocin, a natural chemical in the body that surges before and during climax, gets some of the credit, along with a couple of other compounds like endorphins – natural analogues of morphine.  Sex also spurs the production of estrogen with women – the substance, which eases premenstrual pains.  Researchers at Yale School of Medicine believe it could also help prevent endometriosis – a painful condition where the tissue which should line the womb grows in other parts of the pelvis.

As an Anti-Depressant: One gets into a cheerful mood during an act of love.  In addition to purely psychological satisfaction, the human body produces endorphin – the hormone in charge of elevated spirits and positive perception of the environment.  American psychologist Gordon Gallup reported that sexually active participants whose male partners did not use condoms were less subject to depression than those whose partners did.  One theory of causality:  Prostoglandin, a hormone found only in semen, may be absorbed in the female genital tract, thus modulating female hormones.  Another study showed evidence that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration and that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms providing benefits of zinc, calcium, potassium, fructose, proteins – - a veritable cornucopia of vitality!!

For Your Immune System:  Sex is a very good impetus for the strengthening of the immune system.  Healthy sex saturates your bloodstream with antibodies; therefore, sexually active couples do not suffer from widespread infectious diseases such as flu and colds as frequently as a couple whose love life has dwindled.  Wilkes University in Pennsylvania says couples who have sex a couple of times per week show 30% higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, which is known to boost the immune system and help you fight off colds.

For Relaxation and Better Sleep:  It goes without saying that an act of love ends with the ultimate relaxation and sleep.  The raising level of oxytocin produces a strong tranquilizing effect.  Sex can therefore be considered as a perfect natural soporific medication.  And getting a good night’s sleep has many health benefits.

For Your Relationship:  Sex is healthy for your marriage.  Married couples who are satisfied with their sexual lives report better marital satisfaction… duh…   And having a good sexual confidence feeds into your overall confidence.  And confident people who like themselves tend to do better in the world.  In contrast, sexual dysfunction in a relationship can cause stress, decreasing intimacy and the health benefits of sex.  A lack of intimacy can be divisive, create distance and frustration.  It can also affect the partner’s confidence and emotional well-being.  In these relationships emotional and spiritual safety are compromised and sex often produces feelings of insecurity.  The lack of emotional closeness detracts from the sexual experience and decreases the healthy benefits of sex.

For Your Husband:  The Journal of the American Medical Association, no less, has reported that “high ejaculation frequency was related to decreased risk of total prostate cancer.”  And a team of scientists in Australia “…found that men who ejaculate more frequently between the ages of 20 and 50 are less likely to develop prostate cancer.”  Certain cancer-causing compounds, or carcinogens, have been found to concentrate in prostatic fluid.  Orgasm can prevent build up of these toxic substances.  Another benefit – a 2002 report from a large British population of men said “some protection from fatal coronary events may be an added bonus” of frequent sexual intercourse.  And in men, sex increases the flow of testosterone which helps strengthen bones and muscles.  Testosterone also transports the hormone DHEA which helps boost the immune system.  Men’s Health magazine has gone so far as to call the bed the single greatest piece of exercise equipment ever invented.

excerpts from the “Introduction”

One of my beautiful indulgences is having lunch with my girl friends.  Prior to starting this blog (original manuscript for book) lunch included appetizer, entrée and dessert and my weight rose to 149 lbs by the time the following conversation took place.  My girl friend Chris laughed and said “…there are no ugly women – just lazy ones…” and triggered a conversation resulting with us all in agreement that many women do not fulfill their full beauty potential.  We all even admitted that we ourselves could benefit from a little improvement in at least one area, if not several areas, of our lives as well as our outward appearances.  Our conversation continued… covering topics from manicures, pedicures, facials, makeup, clothes, nutrition, fitness and even personal style of decorating our homes.  Another girl friend made the comment that it was just so much work to be beautiful – - – and that got me to thinking.  Yes, fitting a pedicure appointment, or even worse having to do your toes yourself, can seem like a chore when trying to cram it into an already busy schedule.  On the other hand if you learn how to relax and enjoy the moment you are living in, then a pedicure is a self-pampering experience, even when doing your own.

My goal in writing this blog/book was for me to research, learn, and share with other women, how to fulfill our full beauty potential in every area of our lives and more importantly – enjoying every moment of it.  As a professional makeup artist, my focus is usually on enhancing the beauty of one’s face but this self-help guide goes much deeper – encouraging you to fulfill your full beauty potential in all areas of your life.  All of this contributes to “The Beauty of Being a Woman”.

You are given one life and with that you are given the ability to not only dream but to achieve those dreams.  It is up to you to make the choice to go confidently in the direction of your dreams and live the life you’ve imagined.

For months I only thought about writing this as a book during my Sunday afternoon quiet time in my hammock.  One day I picked up a pen and wrote out a list that later became the titles of these chapters.  But it wasn’t until I wrote the title on my list of goals that it became more than just a wish.  Fulfilling your full beauty potential will take discipline and will be a journey, not a destination.  Learn now to enjoy the process of growth and improvement instead of being dissatisfied with where you are now, or worse – focusing on where you came from.  Success is a behavioral choice and step one is to change your mind.  Let go of old labels you used in the past to describe yourself and develop affirmations supporting who you choose to be.  Step two is to understand that where you are right now is because of the choices you have made.  Yes, life happens, and we are all thrown into situations we don’t want to be in but how we react or respond, what we choose to do with it, and how we allow it to affect us is a choice.  Choose today to accept responsibility for your life.  There is something very liberating about accepting full responsibility for your own life because when you do – then you begin to realize that your future is mostly in your own hands and that, my friend, is exciting.  Your future can become anything you can dream. Make the decision now that the changes in your life will be self-directed.

By now, with my manuscript well underway, my life is changing in so many ways because of the research I am doing in order to learn how to fulfill my beauty potential in each different area of my life.  I’m excited about the changes, especially in my level of fitness and being a healthier weight (now at 138 and working towards 125); but am equally excited about continuing to make goals for my future as I continue on this journey of fulfilling my beauty potential.  Now, lunch is more about enjoying the company of my girlfriends than it is about the food.
